Useful Vocabulary to describe an animal in IELTS Speaking Test

Among the common questions to be asked during the IELTS Speaking Test is to describe an animal. In today's blog, I will be sharing with you 10 facts about Lions, with high quality words to easily use this information during the IELTS Speaking Test.

Let's start off!



1) Nearly all wild Lions Live in Africa, but one small population exists elsewhere.

Wild: An animal is considered to be a wild animal if it lives in nature and is not tame.


2) They can weigh 30 stone: Males weigh almost 30 stone and females weigh almost 20 stone.

Stone: is a weigh measurement. 1 stone = 14 pounds = 6.35 kg


3) They start off spotty.

Spotty: marked with spots. a small round or roundish mark, differing in colour or texture from the surface around it.


4) Males' magnificent manes tell a story.

Magnificent: extremely beautiful, elaborate, or impressive.

Manes: the fur and long hair around the lion’s face.


5) Cubs are reared together.

Cubs: A baby lion is called a cub.

Reared: bring up and care for a child until they are fully grown.


6) Lions can get their water from plants.


7) Lions are big eaters: Lions can eat up to 40kg of meat in a single meal

Big Eaters: someone who eats a lot.


8) They hunt during storms: They hunt more during storms as the noise and wind make it harder for prey to see and hear them. 

Hunt: pursue and kill.

Storms: a violent disturbance of the atmosphere with strong winds and usually rain, thunder, lightning, or snow.

Prey: an animal that is hunted and killed by another for food.


9) Lions are the only cats who roar together.

Roar: a full, deep, prolonged cry made by a lion or other large wild animal.


10) There aren't as many lions as you'd think: There are thought to be as few as 23,000 lions left in the wild.


If you provide full understanding of these words and you practice using them, it will be easier for you to remember them during the test.
